Tidal Pools and Secret Coves: Exploring Izquierda

Escape the Main Beach: The Quiet Magic of Sámara’s Left Edge

When the tide drops just right, the far western edge of Sámara beach transforms into an entirely new playground. Known to locals as the “izquierda” side, the receding water exposes protected, pristine volcanic rock pools teeming with miniature marine life. It’s the perfect, quiet alternative for travelers looking to escape the main stretch of sand for a morning. Here is our quick guide on tide timing, proper footwear, and how to find the secret sandy pockets hidden between the rocks.

Timing the Tide: Your Golden Window

The magic of the left edge is entirely dependent on the ocean’s schedule. To see the rock pools and access the hidden pockets of sand, you need to plan your walk around low tide.

  • The Strategy: Check the local tide chart before you head out. The ideal window to explore starts about one hour before peak low tide and lasts until about an hour after.

  • The Warning: Do not lose track of time. Once the tide turns and begins to push back in, the water rises quickly against the rock faces, which can cut off your path back to the main beach.

Footwear: Skip the Flip-Flops

While Sámara is a barefoot town, this specific trek requires a bit of gear. The reef and volcanic rock structures on the left edge are incredibly sharp, uneven, and often covered in slick algae.

Leave the standard flip-flops at the hotel. Instead, wear a pair of secure water shoes or strapped sports sandals (like Tevas or Chacos) with a solid rubber grip. This ensures you won’t slip while peering into the pools and protects your feet from sharp barnacles or the occasional sea urchin hidden in the crevices.

How to Find the Secret Sandy Pockets

As you walk west past the last beachfront restaurants, the wide sandy beach begins to taper off into rocky outcroppings. This is where the adventure begins.

  • Navigate the Formations: Carefully weave your way through and behind the first major cluster of black volcanic rocks.

  • Look for the Natural Windbreaks: Tucked between these massive stone barriers, you will discover tiny, isolated pockets of soft sand. These hidden alcoves are completely invisible from the main beach.

  • What to Expect: These spots are just large enough to roll out a couple of beach towels. They are perfectly shaded by overhanging jungle palms in the morning and offer an incredibly private, peaceful spot to read a book, listen to the waves, and watch the hermit crabs and bright blue starfish in the neighboring tide pools.

I fell in love with Costa Rica the moment my toes touched the sand – and never left!

I’ve been living in this beautiful country since 2024 and you will find me at the hotel , on our boat; or enjoying a cold beer on the beach. Retiring in Costa Rica isn’t just about moving to a new country, it’s about stepping into a whole new way of life. Imagine waking up to the sound of monkeys, the scent of the tropical air, and the feeling of warm sunshine each and every day I can.

This is a place where life slows down, where vibrant greens of the rainforest meet the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean, and where the philosophy of “Pura Vida” isn’t just a saying, but a principal of life. I found my dream in a place where peace and adventure co-exist, and everyday feels like an opportunity to discover. This is the ultimate reward after working for 5 decades in the oil & gas sector of Alberta, Canada.

Hi, I’m Luci – a diver, mom, and passionate believer in the kind of adventures that ignite the soul.

Although I grew up in the city, I’ve been in love with the ocean for as long as I can remember. That passion led me to study Marine Biology and Natural Resource Management, and for over ten years I’ve dedicated my career to sustainable tourism, creating meaningful nature based experiences, and developing environmental education and marine conservation programs.

I founded my own dive center, Dive Buddies, in the beautiful coastal town of Sámara, Costa Rica. Here, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the incredible marine life that calls these waters home while also discovering the warmth, tranquility, and genuine sense of community that make Sámara such a special place.

My goal is to inspire people to discover just how extraordinary the ocean truly is, to experience its beauty safely, and to show that there are countless ways to appreciate and protect it. Whether it’s through diving, education, or simply spending time by the sea, I hope every experience fosters a deeper connection with the ocean and a desire to care for it for generations to come.
